In a game changing move Hill PHOENIX Inc., a Dover Company, and Advansor join forces to become the world’s largest CO2 manufacturer. With an expanding CO2 refrigerant market this acquisition will both cement Advansor’s position as a leading player in Europe and enable Hill PHOENIX to bring CO2 refrigeration transcritical technology to the North American market.
Danish based Advansor has been acquired by Hill PHOENIX Inc. generating a combined figure of 550 CO2 systems in supermarkets in the US, Canada and Europe. As a result of the acquisition Hill PHOENIX customers will benefit from Advansor’s CO2 transcritical refrigeration and heat pump technology for supermarkets and light industrial applications. Advansor on the other hand, will receive the resources necessary to expand and grow in European markets.

"This is a new chapter in the history of modern CO2 and we are thrilled to take CO2 into a brand new era," said Torben M Hansen, Advansor.

Changing the face of the North American CO2 refrigeration market

CO2 made its debut as a secondary refrigerant in the United States in mid 2006 in Sam’s Savannah Club, which installed a Hill PHOENIX Second Nature® line CO2 system. Since then, CO2’s market share in North America has been growing steadily. However whilst Canadian and European retailers have invested in CO2 transcritical installations, with over 1,200 installations in Europe and around 25 in Canada, these have yet to appear in the United States. The new relationship between Advansor and Hill PHOENIX could dramatically change that, expanding the outreach of CO2 transcritical technology.

“Advansor, the world leader in CO2 transcritical technology, has a track record that is both unique and proven by hundreds of installations,” said Bill Johnson, president of Hill PHOENIX. “Hill PHOENIX’s continued focus on product innovation is a key differentiator in our markets, and this acquisition will build on our technology-leading portfolio.”

Rapid transfer of transcritical technology

Bill Johnson and Scott Martin, Director of Sustainable Technologies at Hill Phoenix, have both indicated that the transcritical transfer will happen from the outset: “The addition of Advansor transcritical CO2 technology to our expanding Second Nature® line of glycol and CO2 systems will provide Hill PHOENIX customers with even more options for reducing their carbon footprint and operational costs,” said Bill Johnson.

“We are excited about this development, which will accelerate the implementation of CO2 in North America. We are already in the middle of pursuing UL permission and ASHRAE approval and we are pursuing beta test sites. There are already implementations of CO2 transcritical systems in Canada, not UL approved, but we plan to do pilot installations immediately in the US and Canada,” said Scott Martin.

The acquisition comes after the Danish CO2 specialist has already had many years of experience with applying its CO2 systems in Europe and the now established technology on the European market is at this point ready to be diffused in the US.
